I have decided that some people are not meant to bake. And I suspect that I am one of those people. I really like to cook. I sometimes follow recipes, but I really enjoy experimenting with ingredients and adding my own spices or changing the proportions a bit to see how things turn out. My husband is a trooper because I don't think my meatloaf ever tastes exactly the same. Anyway, I'm a fan of cooking, but baking requires a precision that I must not possess.
Exhibit A:
What are these you ask? Well, my son and I prepared batter to make oatmeal raisin cookies, but they turned out more like pancakes or round, flat granola bars. I'm not quite sure what I did wrong.
And a few weeks back I made a banana bread using a church cookbook recipe. This particular church cookbook was prepared by my home church from my childhood and includes recipes from my mom and many of our close family friends. I consider this cookbook to be the "no fail" recipes for anything from a roast beef dinner to making a roman apple cake. I was actually rather miffed at Katie G. and her recipe for banana bread which was a burned up disaster when it came out of my oven. I blamed Katie.
However, with two failed attempts in a matter of a couple of weeks, I may need to come to grips with the reality that baking is not one of my gifts. Boxed mixes and bakeries will maybe become my new way to "bake." That's OK by me.
Sincerely,
Abi
