Riding a Bike

Dear Reader,

My husband's "all-star" status seemed to creep from spring to summer and now a bit into fall this year (even resorting to taking his "weekend" on Wednesday.) We continue to be very grateful for his steady employment, but I will say that I miss the opportunity of spending more time together. I have these ideas in my head of certain milestones that my husband can't miss in my son's childhood experience. Riding a bike is toward the top of the list.

This past Wednesday, we took my son to the store and together the three of us picked out a two wheeler bike (with training wheels, of course.) He tried two different sizes of bikes, and the choice of size became clear quickly as my little guy took them each for a test drive. My son had no idea that this was the plan for the day, and so I think he was quite speechless when we announced that we would buy the bike and bring it home with us.

We spent the rest of our morning outside with my son quickly learning how to ride. He loves the brakes - and I'm sure our neighbors love all of the tire marks from his making abrupt stops in "testing" them out! My husband and I took turns walking along side our boy as he became more confident with his new mode of transportation, but riding seemed to come quite naturally.

My husband and I had both pictured a lot of holding on to the back of the bike and walking/running along to teach our three year old how to ride. Not so. We continue to be amazed by our little boy and how his development progresses. Dear husband, thank you for being there for this step, and know that I'm counting on you to take off the training wheels in a year or two when our boy is ready. (And I promise to take turns running behind him.)

Sincerely,
Abi
